Saṁyutta Nikāya

The Collection of Connected Discourses

2,904 suttas, grouped into 5 sections. Each section is further divided into chapters, totalling 56, each containing a group of suttas on a related topic.

The text itself suggests there are 7,762 suttas although many of these are repeated, with variations, throughout the nikāya.

Note: the number of suttas in the Saṁyutta Nikāya varies from one commentary / translation to another because of the abbreviated way parts of the text are written.

The 5 sections are:

• Sagāthā-vagga - suttas containing verses, many shared by other parts of the Pali Canon - 11 chapters (1-11)

• Nidāna-vagga - suttas relating to causation - 10 chapters (12-21)

• Khandha-vagga - suttas relating to the five aggregates - 13 chapters (22-34)

• Saḷāyatana-vagga - suttas relating to the six sense bases - 10 chapters (35-44)

• Mahā-vagga - the great collection - 12 chapters (45-56)
